Coastal Carolina University Rentals- Renting with pets.

When looking for rental properties that allow pets in the Myrtle Beach area your options will be more limited than if you did not have your pet. We know you won't be getting rid of your pet who to most is a member of the family. Why do landlord not rent to pet owners? Well most don't rent to pet owners because of the stereotype that renters with pets will destroy your property. Others won't rent to pet owners because they are not allowed to because of homeowner association rules. There are some owners that can not rent to pet owners because they will loose their insurance if pets are allowed on the property. (this is especially true if you have an aggressive breed of a dog such as a pit bull).

So if you don't want to give up your pet how can you convince landlords to rent to you?

First show that you are a responsible tenant by getting past landlords to give you references. This will show you have a good track record and that having a pet has not caused a burden on former and current landlords.

Second be prepared to pay additional deposit money to secure the rental property you will reside in. Landlords may also charge additional amounts for rent when allowing a pet. You may also be required to pay an upfront pet fee that is non refundable.

Third consider if you have a dog or a trainable pet to get professional training and show landlords proof . A professionally trained dog is more likely to gain landlords approval than one that is not.

Fourth be prepared to accept a property that may not have the newest carpet. Landlords are more likely to let pets in apartments with older carpet that will need to be replaced anyway in a few years.
